H Benjamin Smith

I’m H Benjamin Smith — a photographer who turned a lifelong passion into a profession at the start of 2025. My practice sits at the intersection of travel, animal and street photography: I chase moments and perspectives that provide insight into a place or subjects character and personality.

What I do

  • Travel photography: I document places with an emphasis on atmosphere and story, favouring authentic details over staged spectacle.

  • Animal photography: I pursue natural behaviour and personality, whether that’s in urban settings or far-flung habitats, prioritising respect and an ethical approach. Whether the subject is a loved pet or a wild animal I seek to let the subject reveal their unique character in their own way.

  • Street photography: I look for candid encounters, unique perspectives and textures that distil the character of a city, time or place.

In my approach I work with curiosity and restraint. I love to play with light, whether natural or artificial light I cherish how it can provide contrast and complement the subjects intricacies. Patience and understanding are key in capturing the personality of a subject or place. Technical skill serves an instinctive practice: gear matters, but timing and empathy matter more.

Photography has been my constant companion, but in 2025 I committed to turning it into a career. That decision sharpened my focus, expanded my travel, and deepened my dedication to telling honest visual stories.

Do you have an inspired brief, an idea you want to bring to life, or a challenge that requires a distinct visual approach? Whether you need a finished commission, a creative partnership/project, or access to prints, I welcome enquiries. Please get in touch to discuss your project and how together we can fulfil your goal.
